New Safety Equipment at the Levy County Sheriff's Office Detention Center

The Levy County Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce the newest tool implemented in the battle against the introduction of contraband to our Detention Bureau, the Tek 84 Intercept Body Scanner.

The Tek 84 Body Scanner uses small doses of medically approved levels of radiation to provide an accurate image of the arrested person’s body. It outlines any foreign objects that may have been ingested or concealed on or inside the body.  This body scanner uses levels of radiation that have been approved by the FDA and safety organizations ensuring pregnant females, individuals with pacemakers, insulin pumps and other medical electronic devices are safe.

Arrested individuals delivered to the Levy County Detention Center will be subject to be scanned by the Tek 84 Body Scanner. The newly installed device has already proven to be effective. On April 6, 2022, a female was arrested for a violation of probation. She was asked prior to entering the Detention Center if she had any contraband concealed on her body. She said she did not. She was scanned by the Tek 84 Body Scanner upon entering the Detention Center and the presence of a foreign object was identified. The item concealed in her clothing was identified as Methamphetamine. She was additionally charged with possession of a controlled substance and introduction of contraband into a Detention Facility. A bond of $100,000.00 was issued during first appearance for these new charges.

Sheriff McCallum and the staff at the LCSO dedicated countless hours in researching, locating, purchasing and implementing this equipment into the Detention Center’s daily use. Detention Officers assigned to the booking area have received training and are actively using the device. Lt. Snyder, Chief of Security said, “Achieving this goal and acquiring this equipment will make the staff and those detained in our custody safer. We will detect illegal drugs and weapons well before there is ever an opportunity for these contraband items to be used or introduced into the inmate population.” 

 

Man on Motorcycle Shot

On April 17, 2022 Deputies responded to North East 132^nd Lane north of Bronson to a report of a man shot. Deputies arrived to find a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his lower legs. The victim immediately identified the person who shot him and directed the deputies to the home where the shooting suspect could be located.

Deputies arrived at the home of Michael A. Huff (11/22/84) of Trenton, Levy County and took him into custody. A .40 Caliber handgun was recovered at the scene. Deputies learned the victim and the suspect were involved in a fight the night before at a party. Huff told deputies he saw the victim ride onto his property on a motorcycle and went outside to confront him. He claimed the victim attempted to run him over then got off of the motorcycle and was approaching him in an aggressive manner. He said he shot the victim in self-defense.

The victim gave a statement to Detectives at a local hospital where he was being treated for his injuries. The victim said he saw Huff exit his home as he was riding by and thought Huff wanted to patch things up from the night before. When he got off of his motorcycle and started walking toward him, Huff opened fire.

Detectives located spent shell casings from the .40 caliber handgun in two different locations in Huff’s front yard. The locations of these shell casings contradicted statements made by Huff that he was standing still when he began shooting.

Huff was arrested and has been charged with aggravated battery with a firearm. He is being held in the Levy County Detention Center in lieu of a one million dollar bond.
