On April 28, 2009 Douglas Gregory has been located in the Goethe Forest around 4 PM. The Levy County Sheriff’s Office, Florida Wildlife Commission and the Department of Agriculture searched for Gregory since April 23, 2009. The search consisted over thirty (30) Law Enforcement Officers, six Canine teams, all terrain vehicles and two helicopters.
Officer Paul Langford with the Department of Agriculture located Gregory walking approximately one mile north of where his vehicle was parked. Gregory stated to deputies that he has been in the Goethe Forest since last Thursday.
Gregory was found to be emotionally distraught and dehydrated and he was transported by ambulance to Nature Coast Regional Hospital. Upon receiving medical attention Gregory will be Baker Acted by the Levy County Sheriff’s Office.

Aaron Hope Wanted For Attempted Homicide

Bronson, Florida-The Levy County Sheriff’s Office received a 9-1-1 call in reference to a shooting that occurred behind the Bronson Post Office. Deputies arrived on the scene within three minutes of the call and found the victim, Cosmo James laying on the ground and bleeding from a gunshot wound.
At the scene there were three eyewitnesses to the shooting and they stated that “Doughboy” shot the victim and then attempted to shoot them by firing multiple times. The suspect left the scene in a 1988 Toyota Tan in color 4-door sedan Florida Tag M09-2DK and was seen traveling south on ALT 27 from Bronson.
Investigator Mark Morgan has positively identified the suspect as being Aaron Sysvester Hope also known as Doughboy. The suspect may possible still be driving the above 1988 Toyota and should be considered armed and dangerous.
The victim was transported to an undisclosed hospital by helicopter and he is listed in very critical condition. The suspect is wanted for attempted homicide and three counts of aggravated assault.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Hope is asked to call the Levy County Sheriff’s Office at 352-486-5111 or you can remain anonymous by call Crime Stoppers at 1-877-349-8477. A reward is being offered for the suspect’s arrest.

Robert Thomas Arrested For Lewd & Lascivious Conduct With A Minor

Chiefland, Florida- On April 23, 2009 Investigator Tom Martin arrested Robert Wayne Thomas for two counts of lewd & lascivious conduct on a minor, and he was transported to the Levy County Jail.
In the summer of 2008 Thomas, age 42, threw parties at his residence with as many as 20 kids ranging in ages from 11-15. During these parties Thomas provided alcohol to the children and encouraged them to play games called “Seven Minutes in Heaven” and “Truth or Dare”.
During these games Thomas issued dares to kids. If a child did not want to participate in these dares, he criticized and used peer pressure. Thomas suggested that the kids take body shots and explained to them that body shots were where you poured an alcoholic beverage on the body and consumed it with your mouth. Thomas demonstrated by pouring a body shot of alcoholic beverage on a 13 year old female’s stomach and consuming the alcohol with his mouth.
Later in the evening Thomas allowed several kids to sleep in his bed. While one of the kids was asleep, Thomas stated to investigators that he fantasized of having sexual intercourse with the child. He also stated that he touched one of the kids inappropriately.
In 2009 Thomas continued contact with one of the females by calling and texting her on the phone on a daily basis. Thomas admitted that his relationship was special and he wanted this 13 year old girl to be his wife. Thomas routinely gave the child compliments, showered her with gifts, took her to the movies and asked her sexual questions to perpetuate his fantasy.
Thomas’ conduct and behavior never occurred on school property but he was actively involved with his own child in school functions. Anyone that has had contact with Thomas in an inappropriate manner is asked to call Investigator Tom Martin at 352-486-5111.

Missing Adult

Bronson, Florida- The Levy County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by the Florida Wildlife Commission on April 23, 2009 in reference to an abandoned Blue 1990 Lincoln Town car parked in the Goethe Forest off Middle Road.
The investigation revealed that the car is registered to Douglas Kurt Gregory and he was seen in Ocala, Florida on April 15, 2009. Mr. Gregory did not show up for work and his whereabouts is unknown. The Levy County Sheriff’s Office, FWC, two canine teams and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office Air-1 helicopter searched throughout the night for Mr. Gregory with negative results.
On April 24, 2009 the search continued with over 30 law enforcement officers from the Levy County Sheriff’s Office, FWC, four canine teams, Marion County Sheriff’s Office Air-1 helicopter and the Department of Agriculture. The search location is in a remote part of Levy County and the woods are heavily dense forest.
Mr. Gregory’s mother has reported that he suffers from Sensory Integration Dysfunction and has difficulty processing information from the senses (touch, movement, smell, taste, vision and hearing) and responding appropriately to that information.
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Mr. Gregory is asked to call the Levy County Sheriff’s Office at 352-486-5111. Mr. Gregory has been entered in the computer as an endangered missing person and a statewide bolo has been issued.

Winter Garden Man Arrested On Gun Charges

Cedar Key, Florida- Deputy Allen Breeding arrested Richard Joseph Reichert Sr. for aggravated assault, armed trespassing, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and criminal mischief. Reichert was transported to the Levy County Jail.
On April 18, 2009 Deputies responded to Big Pine Road at Tiger Island in reference to a man with a gun. Upon arrival the victim stated that he has had problems in the past with Reichert because he reported him to Florida Wildlife Commission for hunting out of season. Reichert drove his 4-wheeler on the victim’s property that was posted with “No Trespass” signs around 7:30 PM. Reichert was armed with a black pistol and threatened the victim.
During the incident the victim was able to photograph Reichert on the property depicting his aggressive behavior. Reichert did doughnuts in the driveway and yard causing $ 100.00 in property damage with the 4-wheeler.
Deputy Breeding did a criminal history on Reichert and discovered that in 2006 Reichert was convicted on Federal weapon charges and possession of destructive devices.

Bronson, Florida- In January of 2009 the Levy County Sheriff’s Office implemented a new program designed to assist citizens of Levy County who have special needs. The program includes information on special needs citizens of all ages such as Alzheimer’s patients, autistic persons and others with special needs.
This database is accessible from the Communication Center and includes individual specific information on each entered person such as type of special need, contact person, home address, emergency numbers and specific instructions for first responders on how to best assist that person. The program also includes a photograph of the special needs citizen that can be distributed immediately to first responders if need be. The database is integrated with the 911 and computer aid dispatching systems so that the special needs citizen’s residence is flagged within the 911 mapping system. This allows dispatchers to immediately notify first responders that they are responding to a special needs residence and will also help first responders in returning special needs citizens to their residences if they are located away from home and require assistance.

Flooding In Fowlers Bluff
The flood warning is still in effect and the Suwanee river is expected to crest on April 22, 2009. Flood stage in Fowlers Bluff is 5.5 feet and as of April 18, 2009 the water level is at 6.8 feet. We asking the citizens to monitor the latest forecast and be prepared to take the necessary precautions to protect life and property. Please remember the State of Florida motto if you see water over the road "Turn Around And Don't Drown".
The Levy County Sheriff's Office continues extra patrol in the Fowlers Bluff, Camp Azalea and Manatee Springs area. Our Marine patrol will continue to patrol the waterways and has a zero tolerance for looters and also boaters creating a wake on the Suwanee river. Levy County Sheriff's Office Jail Gets Reaccredited

Bronson, Florida- On February 24, 2009 the Levy County Sheriff's Office was reaccredited by the Florida Corrections Accreditation Commission. This is a prestigious honor and only 32 jails are accredited through Florida Corrections Accreditation.
The Levy County Sheriff's Office Correction Division was initially accredited in February 4, 2003. Every three years an accreditation team closely scrutinizes the jail's policies and procedures to ensure that we are meeting the mandatory standards. After days of investigating the standards the accreditation team reported that we are in 100 percent compliance.
By being accredited with Florida Corrections Accreditation Commission this will benefit the Sheriff's Office:
. Strengthen the Sheriff's Office defense against law suit and complaints.
. Reduce insurance liability premiums and law suits settlements.
. Review of agency status and readiness.
. Process for discovering redundancies.

Arrest Jonathon Mitchem

Williston, Florida- On April 13, 2009 Deputy Joseph Sabbag arrested Jonathon Mitchem for aggravated assault and he was transported to the Levy County Jail.
Deputies responded to the BP Station at 5250 NE 140 Court in reference to a man waving a gun in the parking lot. Prior to Deputy Sabbag's arrival the suspect fled south on Alt 27 in a silver Buick. Williston Police Department stopped the suspect, Jonathon Mitchem and detained him until Deputies arrived.
The investigation revealed that Mitchem and the victim has had problems since the Crab Fest in 2008. The victim and Mitchem had a verbal altercation at the Dollar General Store in Williston earlier in the evening. The confrontation resulted in no physical confrontation and both parties dispersed. Approximately three hours later the victim and Mitchem were in an altercation at the BP Station. During the argument Mitchem pulled and pointed a pistol at the victim and placed the victim in fear of his life. There were several witnesses that observed this incident and called 9-1-1.
The suspect stated that he had a 22 caliber pistol behind his back for protection, but stated that he never pointed the gun at anyone.

Chiefland, Florida- The Levy County Sheriff’s Office has active warrants on George Freeman Wilkinson for scheme to defraud/organized fraud. Wilkinson also goes by nickname “Bo” and may possibly be driving a dark red Chevrolet truck with “Wilkinson Tree Service” on the doors, dark in color Chevrolet Tahoe or a maroon Nissan truck.
Wilkinson has contacted numerous Levy County citizens and tells them that he is doing work in the area and he can give them an excellent deal. Wilkinson will obtain half the payment for services and never perform the work. This should be raising a red flag to any citizens that are told they need payment before the services are rendered. Wilkinson has defrauded over a dozen victims in Levy County and more charges are expected to follow.
Wilkinson has a Gilchrist County warrant for expired tag more than six months and also a Taylor County warrant for passing a worthless check. Wilkinson is a four time convicted felon with a past history being convicted on possession of cocaine and aggravated battery.

Arrest Kenneth Bertha Inglis Florida

Dunnellon, Florida- On April 13, 2009 Deputy Bob Cannon arrested Kenneth Bertha for aggravated assault and battery. Investigator Roger Bell also filed charges on Bertha for possession of marijuana under 20 grams and possession of drug paraphernalia.
At 7:55 PM Deputies responded to 9751 SE CR-337 in reference to a man with a gun. Upon arrival the victim stated that the disturbance was over money that he owed Bertha. Berta knocked on the front door and asked the victim to come outside and walk to the barn. The victim noticed that Bertha had zip ties in his hand and became extremely nervous. Bertha started cursing and pulled a pistol and pointed it at the victim’s stomach. The victim immediately grabbed Bertha’s gun hand and a struggle ensued on the ground. During the struggle Bertha threatened to kill the victim and his wife and burn the house down. The victim’s wife and small infant child were home during this incident and hid inside the bathroom.
The victim was able to hold Bertha down and he stated that he would put the gun up if the victim would let him go. The victim stated that he was scared to let him go but allowed Bertha to put the pistol in his pocket while he continued holding Bertha down. Bertha then asked for a beer and stated that he would leave if he got a beer. The victim had his wife give Bertha a beer and as he was walking away he stated that he would be back to finish what he started. Bertha was seen driving a black corvette and was later located by Inglis Police Department at 288 Sapp Street in Inglis.

Dunnellon, Florida- On April 13, 2009 Deputy Bob Cannon arrested Kenneth Bertha for aggravated assault and battery. Investigator Roger Bell also filed charges on Bertha for possession of marijuana under 20 grams and possession of drug paraphernalia.
At 7:55 PM Deputies responded to 9751 SE CR-337 in reference to a man with a gun. Upon arrival the victim stated that the disturbance was over money that he owed Bertha. Berta knocked on the front door and asked the victim to come outside and walk to the barn. The victim noticed that Bertha had zip ties in his hand and became extremely nervous. Bertha started cursing and pulled a pistol and pointed it at the victim’s stomach. The victim immediately grabbed Bertha’s gun hand and a struggle ensued on the ground. During the struggle Bertha threatened to kill the victim and his wife and burn the house down. The victim’s wife and small infant child were home during this incident and hid inside the bathroom.
The victim was able to hold Bertha down and he stated that he would put the gun up if the victim would let him go. The victim stated that he was scared to let him go but allowed Bertha to put the pistol in his pocket while he continued holding Bertha down. Bertha then asked for a beer and stated that he would leave if he got a beer. The victim had his wife give Bertha a beer and as he was walking away he stated that he would be back to finish what he started. Bertha was seen driving a black corvette and was later located by Inglis Police Department at 288 Sapp Street in Inglis.

National Public Safety Dispatcher Week
April 12-18, 2009 is National Public Safety Telecommunication Week. I want to take a special moment to personally honor the men and women who serve as public safety dispatchers for Levy County.
As Sheriff, I recognize the dispatchers’ play a pivotal role. They perform many different responsibilities that are absolutely crucial for the functioning of this department; just a few examples of the many roles they play include technical support, computer skills, answering complaints, dispatching calls with professionalism and efficiency when dealing with the public. Not only do they have to answer 9-1-1 calls, but they also dispatch to the Sheriff’s Office, Chiefland Police Department, Cedar Key Police Department, Inglis Police Department, Levy County Fire Service and Emergency Medical Services. If taking care of all emergency personnel in the County is not enough, the dispatchers also have to enter all missing persons, wanted persons, stolen tags and vehicles into the Florida Crime Information Center and National Crime Information Center computer systems.
Dispatchers are truly the unsung heroes of public safety. Dispatchers sit in a dark room looking at computer screens and talking to voices from faces that they will never see. It’s like reading a great suspense novel but never getting to finish the chapters because the next impending call requires undivided attention.
When help is needed, the first person the citizens will speak to is a dispatcher. They are the calming influence of all and the quiet, competent voices in the night that provide the pillars for the bridges of sanity and safety. Dispatchers are required to make sense out of the frantic calls, no matter how angry or frightened or hurt the callers may be. Dispatchers meet the anxiousness and adrenalin of the terrified victims, angry citizens and suicidal people with reassurance and competency.
Dispatchers represent what it means to “multi-task”. At any one time, dispatchers are required to perform a myriad of tasks including questioning a caller reporting a crime in progress, typing information into a computer, dispatching a call while at the same time putting another caller on hold and answering the radio. Only a unique and talented person can perform this job well. The emotional roller coaster rolls to a stop after a 12 hour shift just to begin all over again the next day they work.
I regard the Levy County Sheriff’s Office dispatchers as the backbone to this department. In 2008, the Levy County Sheriff’s Office dispatchers handled 118,402 computer aid dispatch events, over 21,213 9-1-1 calls, 7,437 EMS calls, and 3,234 Fire Department calls. This is incredible, especially considering there are only 13 employees. I commend and honor the men and women for the fine job they do and the professional attitudes they exhibit while on duty. Your work does not go unnoticed and I thank you for a job well done.

Arrest Lacey Howard

Bronson, Florida-On April 9, 2009 Detective Mike Bell arrested Lacey Howard for multiple felony charges and was transported to the Levy County Jail.
A crime wave began for business owners in the city of Bronson on April 1, 2009 and ended when Detective Mike Bell arrested Howard on April 9, 2009. Howard broke into the following businesses, stole money and did extensive amount of property damage.
On April 1, 2009 Howard burglarized Cole’s Four Corners bar located at 399 Hathaway Ave. Howard used an axe and broke the window to gain entry into the business. Upon entry Howard stole liquor and did over $ 5,000 in damage to a window, sink and an automated teller machine.
On April 5, 2009 Howard forcibly entered the Capano’s restaurant located at 760 East Hathaway. Howard broke into the vending machines and stole money. Howard stated that he observed a patrol car and fled the scene on foot.
On April 7, 2009 Howard burglarized the Progressive Insurance at 151 East Hathaway Ave. Upon entry he stole property valued at $ 180.00 and damaged a door.
On April 8, 2009 Howard attempted to steal the automated teller machine at Capital City Bank located at 500 East Main Street. Howard was captured on the surveillance camera attempting to steal the ATM machine and destroyed the ATM.
When the drag net tightened, Howard fled to Archer and the man hunt was on. On April 9, 2009 the Levy County Sheriff’s Office received information that Howard was back in town and he was arrested without incident. Howard confessed to the burglaries and was arrested for three counts of burglary, three counts of theft and three counts of criminal mischief.

Bronson, Florida-On April 6, 2009 Deputy Joseph Sabbag arrested Brett Watts for aggravated assault and domestic battery. The domestic dispute led Detectives to solve an armed burglary in the Chiefland area.
The Levy County Sheriff’s Office responded to a domestic dispute at 8750 NE 113 Lane Bronson. Upon arrival the victim stated that Watts punched her and threatened to kill her. The dispute was over Watts using the victim’s car to commit an armed burglary and then later selling the victim’s car for $ 40.00 to purchase drugs.
The victim reported that Watts held a pistol to her head and threatened to kill her if she did not keep quiet about the burglary. Deputy Sabbag arrested Watts for aggravated assault and domestic battery for punching and kicking the victim in the face and legs.
Detective Mike Bell responded and investigated the allegation that Watts committed an armed burglary. It was confirmed that on March 29, 2009 a residence in the Chiefland area had 15 firearms stolen. Detective Bell located and recovered 14 stolen firearms in Archer. Watts has a past history with law enforcement and he has been convicted on burglary, theft and cocaine charges. Watts has been charged with aggravated assault, domestic battery, armed burglary, grand theft of a firearm and 14 counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Bronson Store Manager Arrested

Bronson, Florida-On April 3, 2009 Investigator Mike Bell arrested Wister Reid Whitesides for grand theft. BubbbaQue's restaurant owner noticed that money was missing from the cash register from March 22-28, 2009.
The Levy County Sheriff's Office launched an investigation which revealed that Whitesides was voiding tickets and stole $ 301.85 in cash. Whiteside was the store manager and confessed to the crime and stated that he used the money to buy beer, cigarettes, gas and drugs.

Inglis Man Arrested For The 155th Time

Inglis, Florida-On April 5, 2009 the Levy County Sheriff's Office responded to 10930 SE 201 Street in reference to a disturbance. Upon arrival the victim stated that Terry Lee Cain had been drinking all day and threatened to kill her and break items inside the residence. The victim was in fear that Mr. Cain would do bodily harm. Cain was arrested and transported to the Levy County Jail.
Deputy Breeding arrested Cain for domestic assault and has a $ 2,500 bond. Mr. Cain is familiar with law enforcement and has been arrested 155 times in Florida.

Flood Warning
State Emergency Response Team has issued the following warning on April 5, 2009:
River Flood Warnings remain in effect for most North Florida counties.
Another round of severe weather is possible this afternoon, overnight into early Monday morning across northern Florida. Gusty winds, hail may accompany the cold front passage. Behind the front will be low temperatures near freezing early week in North Florida.
Residents and visitors along the Suwannee River in North Florida should be prepared for possible road closures and evacuations as early as Wednesday.
Governor Crist on Wednesday signed Executive Order 09-81, declaring a State of Emergency in Bay, Calhoun, Franklin, Gadsden, Gulf, Hamilton, Jackson, Leon, Liberty, Madison, Taylor, Wakulla, Escambia, Gulf, Holmes, Santa Rosa, Okaloosa, Walton and Washington counties.
The State Emergency Operations Center in Tallahassee remains activated today to a Level 2 activation which is a partial activation of the state team to support county operations in the Panhandle and Big Bend regions.
MESSAGE OF THE DAY – USE CAUTION IN FLOODED AREAS, BE PREPARED AS ADDITIONAL SEVERE WEATHER IS POSSIBLE TODAY
Monitor local media and NOAA alert radio for updates and warnings.
The Suwannee River is expected to crest at U.S. 90 on the Suwannee / Madison County line mid-week and the I-10 Bridge at the river crossing by late week. Residents should heed any local evacuation orders and road closures.
Stay safe by avoiding flooded areas and roadways. Remember to "Turnaround, Don't Drown" if faced with a flooded roadway. Observe all evacuation orders and wait until local officials give the "all-clear" before returning back home.
Standing flood waters pose possible health dangers. Basic hygiene is critical. Avoid contact with flood waters if at all possible and Keep children away from flood waters.
Watch out for fallen power lines in trees or standing water.
Take this time to restock and supply your personal disaster – supply kits.

Unknown person(s) entered a residence at 423 Marshburn Drive in Bronson and stole property valued at $3238.00. The incident occurred between April 1-2, 2009. A suspicious white car driven by a black male was parked in front of the residence on April 2, 2009.

Carjacking Suspect Arrested In Levy County

Williston, Florida- On April 2, 2009 Deputy Joseph Sabbag arrested Jennifer Marino for carjacking and she was transported to the Levy County Jail.
The Marion County Sheriff’s Office issued a Bolo (Be on the lookout) for a stolen silver 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse Florida tag 931-VNE. The suspect, Jennifer Marino escaped from “The Centers” in Ocala and forced the driver from a Mitsubishi and fled the scene.
The Levy County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a female acting suspicious in the Williston area and located Marino at 4751 NE 185 Ave Williston. Marino was taken into custody on the Marion County charges without incident. Marion County Sheriff’s Office Air-1 helicopter located the stolen vehicle at 18911 NE 50 Street and the vehicle was towed to Marion County. Marino was transported to the Levy County Jail.

Drug Arrest Inglis Check Point
On March 31, 2009 the Levy County Sheriff's Office and the Inglis Police Department conducted a DUI sobriety check point at 135 CR-40, in front of Inglis Town Hall. From 9PM-11PM deputies checked 62 cars and wrote three citations and one written warning.
Officer John Dowd with Inglis Police Department arrested Raymond Ramie Gonzales from Inglis for possession of a controlled substance (Valium) without a prescription. The charge is a third degree felony.
