Home Invasion Robbery Turned Deadly

November 3, 2016

On May 1, 2016 at 2:22 a.m. Levy County Deputies responded to 19690 SE 75th Place in Morriston, Fl upon receiving a 911 call of a shooting. When deputies arrived they found a Hispanic female with two small children and a Hispanic male at the home. The male had been shot and the female suffered blunt force injuries to the head. Initial investigations conducted by Patrol Units revealed unknown masked men burst into the home and made demands for valuables.

LCSO Investigators, Crime Scene Investigators and the Levy County Department of Public Safety were dispatched to the scene. The Hispanic male, identified as Francisco DeJesus (31 years old), was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local trauma unit and succumbed to these injuries days later. The female, identified as DeJesus’ fiancé, was also transported too. Her injuries were treated and she was released.

LCSO Investigators quickly learned the suspects had intentionally targeted this home. DeJesus had prior contacts with at least one of the suspects and his fiancé was able to provide investigators with a description and a nick-name. DeJesus’ fiancé cooperated with LCSO investigators providing information which progressed into the identification of the primary suspect.  The LCSO Crime Scene Investigations Unit also recovered biological evidence from the scene. Analysis of the evidence further aided in the positive identification of the shooter. Investigators had determined the suspects were not from this area, fled and had no other known ties to Levy County. Investigators focused their investigation toward neighboring Polk County where the suspects were believed to have fled.

Investigators questioned the fiancé the night of the incident. She told investigators the suspects got agitated when they could not find what they were looking for and became more violent. She stated she was struck over the head with a gun and the suspects pointed guns at their children. She told investigators Francisco attacked one of the masked men when he threated to shoot her and the children. This is when he was shot. She and investigators firmly believe Francisco’s death was the result of protecting her and their children, ages 1 and 3.

The LCSO has intentionally held the release of this information until now. Investigators were able to obtain a warrant for Murder and Home Invasion Robbery on May 24, 2016 and began actively seeking the shooter. The shooter, identified as Johnny Turner (4-17-94) was known to frequent the Lakeland area. Turner had no permanent address and was known to stay with multiple friends. Turner’s family is from Haiti and it is known he pledged allegiance to a Haitian gang. Investigators also learned Turner had other familial ties in New Jersey.

LCSO investigators were told Turner was monitoring local news stations for reports of this incident and feared he would flee the country if he became aware Law Enforcement was looking for him. Investigators worked closely with the United States Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force and developed information that Turner was with family in Newark, New Jersey. LCSO Investigators went to Newark and met with USMS Task Force members on October 27, 2016 and were able to apprehend Turner without incident.

Turner will be extradited from New Jersey and transported to the Levy County Detention Facility. He will be held without bond until his first appearance in a Levy County court.

LCSO and Gilchrist SO Investigators Combine to Arrest 2 for Firearms Theft

November 1, 2016

LCSO Investigators and some of their counterparts from the Gilchrist County Sheriff’s Office worked together during the month of October to arrest two suspected thieves.  The agencies’ shared information regarding two firearms, a chain saw and a portable generator.  These items were reported stolen from a residence in the Chiefland area during September of this year.  The deputies learned that the items had been pawned in Alachua County.  Through the joint investigation, probable cause to arrest Theresa Louise Sapp (5-23-68) and her son-in-law, Joshua Ryan Hughes (6-21-87) was developed.

Sapp and Hughes had gained the victim’s confidence by performing work around his house.  After developing his trust, they stole the items when the victim was unaware.

GCSO Deputies and LCSO Investigator Mike McNeil helped locate both subjects in Gilchrist County where they were taken into custody.  Both suspects will be facing charges for Grand Theft, Burglary, and Possession of a Firearm by Convicted Felon.  They are being housed at the Gilchrist County Detention Center awaiting transfer back to Levy County.

LCSO wishes to thank Sheriff Bobby Schultz and all the entire staff at GCSO for their continuing assistance in multiple investigations.  Anyone with information regarding the location of any stolen property or persons involved is urged to contact the Levy County Sheriff’s Office at 352-486-5111 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers.

Chiefland Man Arrested for Fencing Stolen Property

October 18, 2016

The LCSO Criminal Investigations Division arrested Daniel Delaney 6-15-72 of Chiefland on October 18, 2016 for Dealing in Stolen Property and Possession of a Weapon by a Convicted Felon. Delaney was developed as a suspect after investigators arrested Gary Vanwinkle and Samantha Corbin. Investigators were able to determine Corbin met with Delaney and sold him several guns recently stolen from an elderly victim in Levy County and a gun stolen from Dixie County.

Investigators interviewed Delaney on October 18, 2016 at his home in Chiefland. Delaney denied meeting with or purchasing guns from Corbin. Unknown to Delaney, the entire transaction was recorded on business surveillance cameras.

Delaney was arrested and booked into the Levy County Detention Facility and is being held pending his first appearance before Judge Browning tomorrow morning.

Investigators believe Delaney has been involved in selling stolen merchandise to unsuspecting citizens in Alachua County, Gilchrist County, Dixie County, Levy County and Daytona Beach. Anyone who has purchased anything from Daniel Delaney is asked to contact Investigator Scott Stancil at 352-486-5111 and allow law enforcement to inspect your purchase. It would be very unfortunate for a citizen thinking they were able to buy something for a “good deal” to wind up being the subject of a criminal investigation, when they can easily have it verified through us.

October 18, 2016

Levy County Sheriff’s Investigators arrested Norman “Ashley” Burnett 8-14-77 for multiple burglaries in the Chiefland and Fanning Springs area yesterday. Burnett first became a person of interest when the “Juice Box”, located in Fanning Springs, was burglarized on October 4, 2016. The owner reported approximately $900.00 worth of merchandise had been stolen when the burglar broke through a window.

LCSO investigators were able to obtain a warrant for Burnett’s arrest on October 10, 2016 for the Juice Box burglary. Burnett’s bond on that case was pre-set at $150,000.00. Investigators located Burnett just off of Manatee Springs Highway yesterday and after a brief foot pursuit apprehended him. Levy County Prevention Coalition-UNWANTED PRESCRIPTION DRUG TAKE BACK

LEVY COUNTY, FL – On Saturday, October 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Levy County Prevention Coalition, Levy County Sheriff’s Office, Cedar Key Police Department, Chiefland Police Department, Williston Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public its 12th opportunity in six years to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.  Bring your pills for disposal to any of the following locations.  (The DEA cannot accept liquids or needles or sharps, only pills or patches.)  The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
Cedar Key Police Department, 490 2nd Street, Cedar Key, FL
Chiefland Police Department, 14 East Park Avenue, Chiefland, FL
Inglis Town Hall, 135 Hwy 40 West, Inglis, FL
Levy County Sheriff’s Office, 9150 NE 80th Avenue, Bronson, FL
Williston Police Department, 5 SW 1st Avenue, Williston, FL
Last April, Americans turned in 447 tons (over 893,000 pounds) of prescription drugs at almost 5,400 sites operated by the DEA and more than 4,200 of its state and local law enforcement partners.  Overall, in its 11 previous Take Back events, DEA and its partners have taken in over 6.4 million pounds—about 3,200 tons—of pills.
This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue.  Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.  Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards.
For more information about the disposal of prescription drugs or about the October 22 Take Back Day event, visit the Levy County Prevention Coalitions page on Facebook.

Two Arrested After Stealing Guns

Levy County Deputies responded to the home of a very alert elderly man in Chiefland on October 1, 2016. The victim reported his home had been burglarized and firearms were missing. The victim told deputies he saw a green and gray truck pull into his drive and two people get out and begin working on it. The victim went outside to see if he could help. The driver identified as Gary Vanwinkle (8-17-80) of Fanning Springs, engaged him in conversation and made the victim believe he knew him and his mother. Vanwinkle’s mother did in-fact know the victim, but he had only met the victim once, when over a year ago when he performed work at the victim’s home.

Vanwinkle’s girlfriend Samantha Corbin (7-15-87) of Old Town was with him. As Vanwinkle and the victim spoke, Corbin asked to use the restroom. The victim showed her where the restroom was and then went back outside to continue his conversation with Vanwinkle. Corbin exited the home after approximately 10 minutes then struck up a conversation with the victim. Vanwinkle then asked to use the restroom to wash his hands. The victim allowed him to enter the home as Corbin spoke to him outside.

Both Vanwinkle and Corbin left the home. Immediately upon going back inside, the victim discovered several guns were missing. LCSO Criminal Investigations Division investigators were able to identify Vanwinkle and Corbin and obtained arrest warrants. Vanwinkle and Corbin were located at Vanwinkle’s mother’s home in Fanning Springs (Gilchrist County) on October 14, 2016 and taken into custody by GCSO deputies. Both are being held in the Gilchrist County Jail and had a predetermined bond set on the Levy County crimes at $155,000.00.
