On August 14, 2022 shortly after 2:00 a.m. a black car drove into the Shands at Kanapaha Emergency Center. Two unidentified subjects were seen on video surveillance removing an injured person from the vehicle who left him near the entrance door of the ER before quickly departing. Emergency room staff immediately began treating the injured person who was identified as Anthony Brown. Brown was suffering from a gunshot wound. No other information was immediately available as Brown did not survive this injury.
The Alachua County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) responded to the emergency room and began their investigation. ACSO Detectives were able to gather a potential lead that led to the identity of the two individuals who dropped Brown off at the hospital and the vehicle they drove. ACSO also located information that the shooting that led to the death of Brown may have occurred in Levy County. Levy County Sheriff’s Office and Alachua County Sheriff’s Office worked diligently together and were able to discover Brown, along with several other individuals, went to a home near Cedar Key in Levy County for the purpose of committing a home invasion robbery.
Based upon the complexity of this case and the multiple jurisdictions it would encompass, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) was contacted and Agents were assigned to assist in this investigation. Levy County Detectives, ACSO Detectives and FDLE Agents interviewed numerous individuals throughout the course of this investigation. This joint investigation led to the identity of four suspects.
During this investigation numerous search warrants, court orders and subpoenas were executed. Digital and physical evidence was seized and four people have been arrested. All subjects arrested were participants in either the planning of or the actual home invasion robbery. The homeowner identified during this investigation who fired the fatal round has been cooperative with law enforcement and no charges have been filed on this individual. Inter-agency cooperation made this investigation successful and led to the capture of four individuals who were involved.
Despite the arrests, this case is far from being concluded. Additional suspects are being sought and Levy County Detectives and FDLE will continue to follow leads.
