Bronson Middle/High School Lock Down

November 2, 2022

Today shortly after 1:00 p.m. staff at Bronson Middle/High School responded to a report of two students suffering from an unknown illness in one of the school bathrooms. The School Resource Deputy was contacted after staff members located a white powder in this same bathroom with the students.

The School Resource Deputy contacted a Detective with the LCSO Drug Task Force to assist in the investigation fearing the substance found contained Fentanyl. The school went into an immediate lock down status to protect any other student from a potential contamination from this deadly drug. Detectives determined the substance was methamphetamine and did not contain the deadly drug Fentanyl.

One student age 13 was transported by Levy County EMS to a local hospital for observation. The other student was treated and released to their parent. The 13 year old student responsible for delivering the drugs has been arrested. She will be processed at the Levy County Detention Center and released to the Department of Juvenile Justice. The school has deep cleaned any area where possible contamination may have occurred and the school campus is safe for students to return tomorrow as normal.

Sheriff McCallum and Superintendent Chris Cowart want to issue this stern warning to students. During the Fentanyl epidemic drugs can appear to be one thing but laced with this deadly drug and if taken or exposed can cause immediate death. This was a frightening experience for all the staff members at BMHS and should serve as a wake- up call to all parents to monitor their children closely and stay involved with their activities and their choice of friends.
