Trap Door Escape Attempt Fails – Couple Arrested

August 30, 2016

John Smith (no we didn’t make up his name) 2-19-84 was arrested on August 18, 2016 at a mobile home located at 13750 NW 88 Terrace in Chiefland. Smith caught the attention of the Sheriff’s Criminal Investigation Division several weeks prior based upon a tip. Investigators learned Smith had traveled to the Chiefland area from Lee County and was wanted by Lee County Sheriff’s Office for burglary and grand theft. It was also rumored Smith had transported illegal weapons from Lee County to Chiefland. Investigators noticed a spike in residential burglaries in this same general area, but were uncertain of Smith’s exact location until August 18th.

LCSO Investigators arrived at the home on 88th Terrace and contacted the home owner who was not related to Smith. Investigators established a perimeter around the home and the owner allowed investigators to search for Smith. Smith was not immediately located. Investigators interviewed Megan Wilk (6-17-86), later determined to be Smith’s girlfriend, who gave conflicting stories as to Smith’s current whereabouts.

Investigators thoroughly searched the room Smith and Wilk were living in and found a trap door in the floor. The trap door had been covered by a piece of furniture. Investigators broadened their search and did locate Smith hiding in the crawl space underneath the mobile home. He was taken into custody without incident. Investigators arrested Wilk for obstruction/resisting arrest without violence, as it was impossible for Smith to place the piece of furniture back on top of the trap door after he exited.

Numerous firearms were found loaded and unsecured inside the home and drug paraphernalia was found in the room Smith and Wilk shared with their small child. The firearms were determined to belong to the home owner and had not been previously reported stolen.

Smith was booked into the Levy County Detention Facility. He was charged with the outstanding Lee County warrant and resisting arrest without violence. His bond has been set at $135,000. Wilk was booked into the Detention Facility and charged with obstruction and child neglect, which is based upon the discovery of the drug paraphernalia found within easy reach of her child. Her bond has been set at $30,000.

Seized Horse Donated to the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranch

August 15, 2016

The Levy County Sheriff’s Office, in cooperation with the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), recently finalized the last remaining seized asset from an old case. Both the LCSO and the DEA joined efforts to shut down a large marijuana growing operation several months back. During the seizure, a 2 year old Paso Fino colt was discovered and his fate had not yet been decided. LCSO Corporal Brandin Sullivan, Agricultural Deputy, petitioned the Levy County Court (on behalf of LCSO) for ownership, and the colt was awarded to the LCSO. The court determined the colt’s owner abandoned it when he fled in his attempt to avoid prosecution.

Sheriff McCallum decided to donate the colt to the Florida Sheriffs Youth Ranch (FSYR). The FSYR established programs to aid communities’ at risk youth by giving them a foundation for success upon completing the program. The FSYR challenges youth, both physically and mentally and often uses large animals to teach responsibilities to the youth. Haley Eatman, the Assistant Farm Manager for the FSYR Live Oak location came to one of the LCSO animal recovery sites to pick up the colt.  She has not decided on a name for their newest addition; however, Ms. Eatman said he will be trained and assigned to future youth ranchers.

Arrest Made for Possession of Child Pornography

August 15, 2016

Levi Jermaine Griffin (7-12-1977) was arrested by the Levy County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division on August 12, 2016. Investigators were contacted by Griffin’s Federal Probation Officer who had received information that Griffin was in possession of images of children on his computer, which the complainant believed were pornographic.

Investigators met with the complainant and recovered a tablet style computer. During the interview with the complainant, a description of the images seen on the computer was given. LCSO investigators immediately began the process to obtain a search warrant for the device.

Based upon the complainant’s description of these images, investigators located and interviewed Griffin. Griffin initially refused to answer questions and was released. However, he was given an order to have no contact with the material witness in their investigation. Investigators learned that within the same hour Griffin contacted the complainant and attempted to convince them to destroy the evidence. Griffin was located and arrested for tampering with a witness.

LCSO Investigators obtained a warrant for the tablet and located 164 images of children which do classify as pornographic. Griffin was also charged with possession of child pornography.

Griffin is being held at the Levy County Detention Facility on a $350,000 bond and is charged with Tampering with a Witness and Possession of Child Pornography.
