Officer Memorial Day
&
Police Week
Date: May 15, 2011
May 15th has been declared as Officer Memorial Day, followed by Police Week through May 21, 2011. The nation reflects and pauses to recognize the service & sacrifice of law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice. Today, in Unites States, some 900,000 officers put their lives on the line for the safety and protection of others. The men and women serve with valor and distinction and with great success.
The protection comes at a price. Each year officers are assaulted and killed in the line of duty. On Sunday, January 28, 1945 Levy County Sheriff's Deputy A. Hagood Ellzey was shot and killed in the line of duty. Deputy Ellzey was lured in the woods where he was ambushed. On Saturday, July 30, 1988 Williston Police Office, Corporal David Wayne Moss was shot and killed in pursuit of a burglary suspect. Cpl Moss was able to return gun fire killing the suspect before he succumbed to his injuries.
The Levy County Sheriff's Office is dedicating to honoring all of American law enforcement heroes. We pray every day for the safety of the men and women that serve with pride and their families.
